    Course Description:

    This course introduces you to the Hebrew language and The Institute of Biblical Studies teaching method, Hebrew in Hebrew, which the state of Israel has used to teach immigrants since 1948.

    A Few Words About Me
    Tami Weyl was a senior lecturer at the Rothberg International School for Foreign Students in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Tami Weyl has been serving as the director of the pre-academic program for new immigrants at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Tami Weyl has dedicated her career in educational content development of the studies of the Hebrew language. She has published educational books, students booklets and even a series of computer applications designed to enrich vocabulary, grammar and proper use of language. Tami has been a member of  of the education committee of the Hebrew department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 1979. She strongly believes in the effectiveness of the combination between language acquisition and computers, and in taking an active part in making your dreams a reality. Therefore, she has been developing multimedia applications for teaching Hebrew since 1990.

    Education
    Tami Weyl holds a B.A. degree in Hebrew Language and Sociology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She also has an Education Certificate with the specialization in Hebrew Language and Literature. In 1982, Tami Weyl was endowed of the Hebrew Language on behalf of the Committee for Language Endowment.

    Professional Experience
    Tami Weyl is an experienced academic educator and academic content developer. She has taught countless Hebrew courses in various institutions to teachers and students from all around the world, including the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris, France. As part of her position in the Hebrew department, she has been teaching Hebrew, writing materials for academic courses and exams, advising, and managing. She is experienced with linguistic counseling to the Ministry of Education in France and is a member of a research team at the School of Education in Israel. Together with other colleagues, Tami Weyl has published several books and academic articles on various topics concerning the Hebrew language.

    A Few Words About Me
    Shira Cohen-Regev finds the combination of teaching Hebrew and e-learning appealing and challenging and enjoys every minute of virtually teaching Hebrew. Shira believes in virtual schools and online education. Shira is one of the leaders at the Ministry-of-Education of Gender-Equality Unit. She has also developed and taught online courses in professional development for teachers. Shira has a passion for teaching and writing and she incorporates these passions into all of her occupations. She is believes that the best way to teach a language to children and adults is by working with the students on an individual and small-group basis.

    Education
    Shira Cohen-Regev holds an M.A. degree in Child Development and Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.

    Professional Experience
    Shira Cohen-Regev specializes in education and the development of educational programs. She has been teaching classes, both to students and teachers, for over 20 years. Shira taught and tutored Hebrew as a Second Language at the University of Pittsburgh. Here at the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies, she taught online courses of all levels of Hebrew and developed content for Modern Hebrew courses. She is also the developer of the academic course of Biblical Hebrew at the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies. Currently, Shira is training and instructing new teachers of Modern & Biblical Hebrew at the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies..

    Syllabus Summary:

        It's so Nice to Meet You!
        In our first class you’ll start learning how to introduce yourself in Hebrew. You will also learn to recognize, write, and use the first 6 letters of the Hebrew Aleph Bet.

        I am a Student, You are a Student.
        In this unit, you’ll get more into the skills involved with initiating a conversation, you will expand your vocabulary and learn some more Hebrew letters.

        Where Do You Live?
        This unit will continue to expand your Hebrew vocabulary with the aim of strengthening your ability to converse. At the end of this unit, you should be able to conduct a basic Hebrew conversation. You’ll also be taught how to answer typical questions that might arise in day to day interactions. By the end of this unit, you and your teacher will be engaged in your first interactive dialogue.

        What’s This? Who’s that?
        In Hebrew, every object is assigned a gender, either male or female. In this unit, you’ll learn how to identify an object as either male or female and how to describe them in plural form. As always, we’ll continue working on expanding your vocabulary.

        We study Hebrew.
        In Hebrew, there are ten different personal pronouns. In this unit, you’ll get to know all of them, along with their different uses. You will also learn how to conjugate verbs in plural form.

        From Alef to Tav.
        In this unit we will review the vocabulary you learned in the previous units and summarize the topic of the alphabet: we will read, write, and recall the letters’ names and sounds. We will also learn the order of the letters in Hebrew and the Nikkud symbols.

        He reads a newspaper and she talks on the phone.
        In this unit, you will learn the Hebrew verb system. We’ll get to know everyday and useful verbs, and learn how to use and conjugate them for use in present tense (for example: he reads a book, they read a newspaper).

        I want to study.
        In Hebrew, unlike English and many other languages, verbs are organized into various categories. This unit will introduce you withdifferent verb categories. We will also introduce the concept of the infinitive in Hebrew.

        Coffee with milk, please.
        In this unit, you’ll learn how to be polite in Hebrew and how to handle yourself in various situations that require politeness, like ordering a cup of coffee. Even better, we’ll teach you how to apologize when you forget to pay for it ?.

        Numbers: One to Ten.
        In this unit, you will learn the numbers 0 through 10; you will also learn how to say your phone number in Hebrew and how to request a phone number from the information service.

        What is the time?
        In this unit you will learn to tell the time in Hebrew and to describe your daily routine.

        There is no wine, but there is beer.
        Here we will learn the words pertaining to existence of items and the special sentence structures that result from using these words. We’ll have some fun practicing using some typical restaurant interactions.

        Where are you going?
        In this unit we'll add new question words (where to? why?) and practice all the question words we have accumulated. We will also learn some new verbs including “to be”, and the concept of “which” in Hebrew.
        Throughout the lesson we will accompany Amir and Sharon in their attempts to go to the movies, to satisfy their hunger, and in sharing their thoughts about work.

        What's your name?
        In this unit we will expand our presentation abilities and tell what we have or don't have. We will also learn about the days of the week.

        Would you like to meet Shirley?
        In this unit, we will go to a birthday party and will be introduced to some new verbs. We will also learn a preposition that is unique to the Hebrew language “??”.

        Birthday.
        In this unit, we will learn how to count from 1-100 and how to say our age. We will also discuss what you can give someone who has everything.

        He can't be here because he has to run.
        In this unit we will learn to count feminine objects. We will also study some new verbs.

        How many siblings do you have?
        In the unit we will first learn how to count masculine objects, then we will learn to conjugate the preposition "??" in singular, and then we will learn to identify family members. At the end of this lesson we will know about the families of our classmates and teacher.

        Goodbye!
        This is our last lesson of Ulpan 1, we will learn about the different rooms of the house and review our whole course. We will say goodbye to the teacher and to our classmates.
